We’re often asked: why do you make the the food the way you do? As cliché as it sounds, it’s because of love. Love is the most important ingredient … in everything we do. Love for each component we choose, love for the meals we serve and love for the families we feed every day.
We always say you should be proud of what you serve to your family, so why fill your meals with unnecessary fillers and preservatives when you already have real flavor from real ingredients? In our Big Kitchen, ‘Less is Amore,’ and you can see that philosophy come to life just by looking at our Nutrition Facts Label. Overwhelmed by all of the information? Here are a few tips to help you navigate:
This number is usually at the top and is quite an important one. The Serving Size tells you how much food is in the package and are standardized to make it easier to compare similar foods. This number also influences the number of calories and all the nutrient amounts listed, as all following numbers are based on one serving.
Percent of Daily Value
Remember that Nutrition Facts are measured based on a 2,000 calorie diet. This number helps you determine if a serving of food is high or low per specific nutrient.
Calories (and Calories from Fat)
Calories provide a measure of how much energy you get from one serving. It’s an important number, but not the only thing to consider. A meal can be very low in calories but also low in protein and important nutrients, leaving you hungry again shortly after eating.
You’ll notice that nutrients are listed in order of how the general public consumes them. For instance, since we normally get adequate amounts of fat, cholesterol, sodium and carbohydrates, they are listed first. On the flip side, Vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron are not always present in everyone’s diet. Creating a healthy balance between all nutrients is vital to maintaining proper health.
Now, here’s the part we think is the backbone to everything on the label – the ingredients. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity and the major ones are listed first – for us its vine-ripened tomatoes. The Ingredients List is one of the most important sections for us as this is where you may learn more about a company’s ingredient philosophy and learn more about how each one is processed. For example, in our ‘Made with Organic’ Lasagna with Meat Sauce entrée, you’ll notice that 70% or more of the ingredients are organic and listed as such. We also list the type of pasta we use – Organic, ancient grain Kamut® Khorasan wheat – as well as the fact that our beef is grass-fed. You’ll notice that our meals are never stuffed with preservatives such as Glycerine, a non-natural sweetner, or fillers like soy deriviatives to bulk up the weight of food. We want to make sure our customers know and understand what our meals are made of – Just real ingredients with authentic flavor.
